Svalbard is a duty- and tax-free area; goods you bring back to mainland Norway are processed by customs on arrival as if you entered from abroad—keep receipts and know the duty-free value limits (different for trips over/under 24 hours).

For your own safety, don't leave Longyearbyen (or other settlements) without polar-bear protection/a guide—organized tours provide the required safety setup.

Jan Mayen isn't open to casual tourism: landings must be applied for in advance and coordinated with the station commander, so most travelers focus on Svalbard instead.
